Molecule™ is the right way to clean care for Nomex® racing suits and other technical fabrics

Motor sports injuries have decreased in recent years, thanks to improvements in the quality of protective gear. But despite driver and industry precautions, racing is still a dangerous sport.

Exposure to a flash fire for even a few seconds can lead to serious injury or loss of life. Severe skin burns occur more often than they should because protective clothing is not properly cared for or has not been made resistant to flammable liquids.

Racing suits made from Nomex® technical fabric have extraordinary properties to protect drivers from flames and heat. Care instructions published by Nomex® manufacturer DuPont™ state that this unique fabric requires special care to be fully effective. DuPont’s laundering guide cautions Nomex® users that the fabric must be kept clean. “Flame resistance can be compromised by the presence of flammable contaminants on the garment…,” the guide explains.

However, DuPont™ advises against using ordinary soaps for removing these contaminants. “Soap scums may be flammable and could adversely affect the thermal protective performance of the garment,” DuPont’s care guide warns.

Further, laboratory testing and analysis demonstrate conclusively that untreated Nomex® fabric will absorb flammable contaminants, creating a significantly higher risk of injury.

Side-by-side experiments in a controlled research facility reveal that if Nomex® fabric is not treated with Molecule™, there is a measurably higher chance that during a flash fire, flames will breach the protective layers of Nomex fabric, and directly burn exposed skin.

Scientists at Molecule Labs conducted tests on SFI Manufacturer-Certified two-layer Nomex® racing suits in side-by-side analysis to evaluate and compare the characteristics of untreated Nomex® fabric and Nomex® fabric treated with Molecule™ Protector.

Test results reveal that Nomex® fabric that has been treated with Molecule™ Protector repels fuel and contaminants for better protection. In test after test, analysts observed that untreated Nomex® fabric was far more susceptible to dangerous saturation levels of fuel and contaminants, leading to measurably higher fabric burn rates and increased probability of injury to exposed skin.
